What the titles mean in Greece

Every practising doctor in Greece must belong to the medical association where they practise, which records the specialty title awarded by the Region. A doctor can train in plastic surgery without ever being awarded the title; the register shows the difference.

We read the registers of the Athens, Thessaloniki, Piraeus and Heraklion medical associations directly, where most Greek plastic surgeons practise, and check HESPRAS and eight private hospitals. Names typed in English letters are converted to Greek automatically.

How to check it yourself

  1. Search the surgeon's surname in Greek capitals on the medical association register where they practise. Athens Medical Association register
  2. Check the specialty reads 'Πλαστική, Επανορθωτική και Αισθητική Χειρουργική'. 'Χειρουργική' alone is general surgery.
  3. Check the HESPRAS member list: associate (Πάρεδρο) members are still in training.

What does HESPRAS membership mean?

Its statutes say ordinary members must hold the plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery specialist title and be registered with a Greek medical association. Associate members are trainees.

I'm considering surgery abroad. What should I check?

The same principle applies everywhere: find the official register in that country and look for specialist registration in plastic surgery. See every country we cover
