In Austria, a plastic surgeon should hold the Facharzt title in Plastische, Rekonstruktive und Ästhetische Chirurgie. Here's where to check it and what to look for.
We read part of the official register directly. Last checked 18 October 2026What the titles mean in Austria
The Austrian Medical Chamber keeps the national doctors' list, fed by the nine state chambers. 'Schönheitschirurg' is not a protected title; the specialist title is 'Facharzt für Plastische, Rekonstruktive und Ästhetische Chirurgie'.
The national list has a captcha, so we read the state chambers directly for Vienna, Lower and Upper Austria, Salzburg, Burgenland, Styria and Carinthia, and check the national society. Tirol and Vorarlberg must be checked by hand.
What we check for Austrian surgeons
Society membership is voluntary. Not being a member doesn't mean a surgeon isn't qualified.
How to check it yourself
- Search the surgeon's surname on the Österreichische Ärzteliste and complete the text check. Österreichische Ärzteliste
- Look for 'Plastische, Rekonstruktive und Ästhetische Chirurgie' among their titles.
- 'Plastische Gesichtschirurgie' or 'Plastische Operationen' is not the plastic surgery specialty.
